Customs Amendment (Safer Cladding) Bill 2017 No. , 2017

Interesting recent developments post the devastating London apartment fire involving exterior aluminium cladding with synthetic cores.

The following material has been identified to be added to the list of Prohibited Imports under the Customs Act 1901, that has been incorporated into subject Bill recently introduced by Senator Nick Xenophon :-

“Customs Act 1901

1 After section 51AB

Insert:

51B Importation of polyethylene core aluminium composite panels

            (1) The importation into Australia of polyethylene core aluminium composite panels is prohibited.

            (2) Polyethylene core aluminium composite panels are taken to be prohibited imports under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.”

The date of affect is Royal Assent, interesting if the Bill passes both Houses and receives Royal Assent shortly thereafter, particularly for goods on the water.
